location: FuJien Province, ShiShi, YongNing Historical Town
commissioned by: YongNing Government 2018 size: 450000m2 ring zone, project part of larger team led by Urbaneer Shanghai
YongNing is an ancient town in ShiShi City. The site is about 7km from the ShiShi center. Closest bigger City is QuanZhou, about 35km form our site. YoungNing old town has vast history through trade and military functions. There are still visible remnants of the past versatile group of people who lived here, and many of their descendants are still living here. The old city is rich in history, and the layers of time stretch from centuries ago to the present day. These characteristics can be enhanced and brought to light by the means of design.
The outline of our project area, the existing old town, still follows the border of the demolished city wall which used to circle around the city. Our design introduces a green zone along the location of the historical wall. This defines the existing old city as an entity through the means of landscape design and urban planning. This buffer zone also creates a dialogue between the old city and the surrounding new city and solves the questions concerning the clash of building scale and adaptation of historical urban fabric to comply with the modern city planning rules.
Some remnants of the old city wall still remain, which we can reinforce and protect. In other areas, we can create a memory of the wall by the means of landscape design and urban planning. A clear border line can be created with subtle features such as water elements, pavement treatment or plants. The border should not divide the exterior areas from the interior, but the flow of people should be free. The gates can be recreated in a symbolic way.
There are different urban spaces and interesting functions along the border zone. Total length of border ring by foot is 2800 meters.
