Hetang village is part of WuGang City in Hunan province. Our site is located 5km north from the WuGang city center, and just one kilometre from a newly built airport. Drive from the HeTang village centre to the airport takes 15 minutes.
The local government wanted to develop the HeTang village to attract tourists. Our design derived from the existing situation and elevated the visual image in a respectful manner in relation to the local traditions. Key intention of the design was to maintain the rural village atmosphere, whilst reinforcing the special and unique qualities of the HeTang.
Our conceptual design connected the entrance area, the central agricultural valley and the main village centre together. The proposed new tourist attractions evolved around farming, experiencing rural living and the mountains surrounding HeTang Village. Many existing yet derelict rural buildings were proposed to be refurbished to provide services for the future visitors. We also made a general infrastructure design which improved the functionality and updated the general living standards of the whole village. The proposed functions and the feasibility of the design was assessed in collaboration with the Chinese Jiulue Tourism company. Our design task continued as we provided the client with more detailed design documents and construction drawings for public spaces, roads and other essential areas.
