DongShui Village is a small farmer village 120km drive east from Beijing. Even though the structure and topography of the village is very interesting, the buildings and the overall image of the village was not very attractive. A holistic village design was needed to improve the general visual quality and functionality of the public areas to attract more tourists.
The village was divided into two design areas by prominent topography. Most of the village functions and buildings are located on a higher plane along the older very narrow road traversing the village. These mostly residential areas were designed to improve infrastructure, safety, and general village image. On the lower plane, there is a green valley, where a river once ran, but a narrow car road has been built. This valley was designed as a pleasant tourist attraction in itself. In the end of the valley road, there is a famous 1600-year-old tree and along the road we have created several selfie-worth spots by means of landscape design. The few buildings in the valley were suggested to be transformed to commercial functions to further improve the touristic and public character of the valley design.
